Swan Song and Reminiscence feature artists performing on period instruments, including a rare copy of an eighteenth-century Viennese-style fortepiano and a lavishly decorated eighteenth-century German-style harpsichord (see attached photo). The program comprises Fantasy in A major for fortepiano, Wq 58/7, from Six Collections of Keyboard Sonatas, Free Fantasias, and Rondos for Connoisseurs and Amateurs; Concerto in D major for Harpsichord, Wq. 43/2; the rarely performed, only Double Concerto for Harpsichord and Fortepiano, in E-flat major, Wq. 47; Symphony in C major, Wq. 181/2 and Arias from the oratorio “The Israelites in the Desert.” The ensemble of Los Angeles–area musicians includes as soloists, harpsichordist Patricia Mabee; soprano Harriet Fraser; and fortepianist and harpsichordist, Scripps College prof. emerita Preethi de Silva. Scripps College prof. emeritus Michael Deane Lamkin will be the guest conductor for the two concertos.
“Remembrance,” a concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide features works by Komitas, Mozart, Khachaturian, Mirzoyan and Bagdasarian at 4 p.m. Admission is free. A reception follows the performance.
