Special events mark the 100th Rose Bowl Game

On Jan. 1, the Rose Bowl Game will be celebrating 100 years of New Year’s post-season football competitions by hosting the traditional showdown between the top football teams in the Big Ten and the Pac-12 college conferences.
The 100th Rose Bowl Game will also mark the first time the game will be played in the newly renovated stadium. Improvements to the structure include a new press box, a new scoreboard and widened tunnels. All told, the project has cost the city more than $300 million, up from an original estimated cost of $153 million — a cost overrun leading to a downgrade in the city’s Fitch Credit Rating from an AAA to an AA+. 
 
Known as “The Granddaddy of Them All,” the annual football contest is the oldest intercollegiate post-season bowl game between two major conferences in the United States. Next year will also mark the second time that the Rose Bowl has hosted two postseason bowl games in one week. After 16 years, the Bowl Championship Series will end as the college football championship moves to a playoff system.
 
In partnership with the two conferences and the BCS, the Tournament of Roses Association announced plans to unveil a new logo of the Rose Bowl Game Presented by Vizio and changes to the champion’s trophy to commemorate the anniversary.
 
In addition, the “100th Rose Bowl Game Commemorative Book,” written by Malcolm Moran and published in partnership with Whitman Publishing House and the Vault Series, will become the first book commissioned by the Tournament of Roses in the history of the game. Along with that, the Tournament will launch a social media campaign 100 days prior to New Year’s Day.
 
The Rose Bowl Game’s All-Century Class will also be announced, and there will be an opportunity for fans to leave their own permanent mark on the historic stadium by contributing to the Legacy Campaign, established to help defray some of the costs of renovation.
 
Yet another key highlight of the event is the premiere of a music video, which will be aired on national television during the Rose Bowl Game. The video features a song created just for the occasion by recording artist Dustin Tavella called “100 Roses.” 
 
“The music video features five runners from various locations from around the city who run toward the stadium as various scenes and images are displayed in the background while Tavella sings on the famous Colorado Street Bridge,” said Ed Corey, senior game manager for the Tournament of Roses.
