Interim superintendent named as Gundry heads to Santa Clara County

In a unanimous vote, the Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education selected Brian McDonald to serve as interim superintendent.
 
McDonald’s appointment will take effect later this month after current Superintendent Jon Gundry’s pending resignation becomes effective.
 
Gundry, who came to the district in 2011, resigned last week after being named the sole finalist to lead the Santa Clara County Office of Education. 
 
“It is an honor to serve the Pasadena Unified community in the position of interim Superintendent,” McDonald said in a prepared statement. “I look forward to the opportunity to work together with the school board for the achievement of all students in our schools.” 
 
Since coming to the district as chief academic officer in 2011, McDonald, who speaks Spanish fluently, has overseen the implementation of the new Common Core State Standards. He has also led the district’s magnet school program and expanded the district’s dual-language immersion programs. 
 
Previously, McDonald served as the school improvement officer in the Houston Independent School District, where he also served as an elementary and middle school principal for six years. McDonald has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Houston-Downtown, Texas, and a master’s degree in education administration from Texas Southern University. He earned a certification in principalship from Harvard Graduate School in 2002, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Sam Houston State University in 2010.
 
“Dr. McDonald’s experience and leadership will be crucial in maintaining consistency and continuity during this time of transition,” said School Board President Scott Phelps in a statement. “His proven track record in closing the achievement gap, along with his collaborative leadership skills, will help usher PUSD into its next phase of growth.”

THE PROBLEMS AT PUSD ARE PERVASIVE--Education is an important key indicator in predicting our success as a society. It encompasses a valuable legacy each generation can pass on to the next. The generosity of our community in approving over $500M in expenditures on school buildings reflects this commitment. Once again our communities’ generosity is being misused.
Cost over-runs and time delays are again prominent features in PUSD’s bond projects. We were assured by the Board and Administration that we would avoid these mistakes. Unfortunately that is not the cas. As a Pasadena taxpayer and business owner - I have a philosophical and personal investment in the program’s success. I am currently paying the same amount annually in taxes to support these bond measures, as I paid for my daughters’ yearly tuition in college. Five and a half years latter much of the money remains unspent, while funds continue to be allocated to questionable projects.
* Why did PUSD build two new middle schools, while closing 5 schools and plenty of space for students in existing schools?
* Why is Sierra Madre middle school being built for 600 students, when enrollment last year was only 400 students?
* Why are we throwing away a $2M set of plans for the Marshall High School Gymnasium to design a new Central Kitchen and then throw them away?
* Why did we build football stadiums before classrooms improvements?
* Why did the District never submit applications for State funding? Neighboring districts received millions of dollars for career technical education.
* Why are we spending $90 Million in improvements ($50,000 per student) at the Blair, ($30,000 per student) at the McKinley Campus?
* Why did the District spend millions of dollars improving schools only months before they were closed?
* Why has PUSD spent only 20% of the funds in the northwest region, when 60% of the students attending PUSD schools live in northwest?
I find it unacceptable that these challenges continue to repeat themselves in this current bond program. Our tax dollars are lost in the maze of wasteful bureaucracy rather than being spent for the good purpose for which they were collected – the education of our students in contemporary learning environments. We still have the financial resources to accomplish this, despite mismanagement and overspending. To ensure a different result, we must expect a different course of action from PUSD leadership. Let’s ask for that new course now – and stay invested in its successful completion.
