Academy takes two

Two Caltech faculty members have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Anneila Sargent, the Rosen Professor of Astronomy and director of the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-Wave Astronomy, studies the formation of stars. A former chair of NASA’s Space Science Advisory Committee, Sargent also searches for undiscovered planetary systems.

Henry Lester, the Bren Professor of Biology, has made important discoveries about the neuroscience of nicotine addiction. His identification of cell receptors involved in addiction could lead to successful treatment therapies.

With the induction of these scientists in October, Caltech will have 83 faculty members sitting with the academy, an independent national policy research center that investigates complex scientific questions.
