Russell fights Marriage Amendment

By Kevin Uhrich 06/08/2006

The Rev. Susan Russell of All Saints Church in Pasadena was joined by other clergy and human rights activists on Capitol Hill Monday, urging Congress to resist approval of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage that was set to be heard this week by the US Senate.

Russell was part of the Human Rights Campaign contingent delivering more than 250,000 postcards to the Capitol making it clear that the Constitution should not be used as a political weapon.

"As an Episcopal priest I have taken vows to respect the dignity of every human being and as an American citizen I have pledged to uphold liberty and justice for all," Russell said in a prepared statement.

"The federal Marriage Amendment violates both of those principles and I believe it is imperative that people of faith opposed to legislating discrimination step up and make their voices heard in this critical debate," she said.
