Saving the electric car

Members of the electric vehicle advocacy group Plug in America are urging Pasadena City Council members to resist efforts by auto manufacturer Nissan to recall and destroy a fleet of electric vehicles it has leased to the city.
Paul Scott, an activist with the group, urged council members Monday to give their blessing to a publicity campaign that would “shame” Nissan into allowing the city to keep the zero-emission vehicles.
On Tuesday, Nissan employees came unannounced to repossess the vehicles, but city officials would not immediately release them pending a review of the lease agreement, said city spokeswoman Ann Erdman.
The city is sending a letter to Nissan this week asking to purchase the vehicles, said John Hoffner, a Pasadena Water and Power program manager for conservation efforts.
Mayor Bill Bogaard asked Plug in America to put their intentions in writing, while Councilman Paul Little said he feared backing the group could end up hurting the city’s efforts to save the cars.
