Nancy Drew mania comes to Pasadena Hilton to save the world from Paris Hilton

By Carl Kozlowski 06/14/2007

In a world gone mad from following the every move of Paris and Lindsay and Britney, millions of concerned parents — and, frankly, anyone who cares about our culture — are left wondering if the entertainment world will ever provide a decent role model for young women again.

Well, this weekend marks an attempt to find hope for the future from back in the past, as the iconic teenage sleuth Nancy Drew comes roaring back into the American consciousness with both a new movie and a string of conventions nationwide.

Locally, the epicenter for the action is at the Pasadena Hilton, where the Nancy Drew Sleuths club will host a convention on Saturday that includes presentations by numerous people, including the 1970s-era “Nancy Drew” TV series producer Arlene Sidaris.

“Nancy Drew” movie consultant Jennifer Fisher will also be on hand to discuss the film, and a mix of series authors and prime fans of the character are also expected to appear.

For even more fun, attendees will take part in solving an interactive mystery, and there will be a raffle of Nancy Drew merchandise to benefit the Burbank Public Library.

The Burbank Library itself is also a site for Nancy-related fun from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday as it hosts a “Nancy Drew Day.” A talk called “Collecting Nancy Drew 101” will be a highlight, and attendees can demystify their Nancy Drew book collections and find their true values on the collector market. There will also be lots of info on Nancy Drew in film and television, and Warner Brothers is sponsoring a giveaway tied in to the new “Nancy Drew” film — all at the Burbank Public Library's Buena Vista Branch, 300 N. Buena Vista St., Burbank.
