A Coffee Gallery double shot

A Coffee Gallery double shot

By John Sollenberger 10/09/2008

Get a double shot of singer/songwriter magic tonight at Coffee Gallery Backstage with Tony Gilkyson and Dafni sharing the bill.

Petite singer, songwriter and guitarist Dafni creates music hearkening back to Tin Pan Alley, with elements of an Appalachian barn dance and the feel of a Parisian street corner blended in the mix. But her music is much more than that. She pulls in myriad influences ranging from Nina Simone, Frank Zappa, Seeds, Ani DiFranco, Judy Garland, Led Zeppelin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, the Beatles and many others. Some influences may be from times long-gone, but she blends them into tales of contemporary life and love designed to capture the listener’s heart.

Hollywood native, guitarist and songwriter Gilkyson is the son of Walt Disney composer Terry Gilkyson. He played with LA punk icons X for a decade and has played alongside a stellar roster of artists, including Lone Justice, Sam Phillips, Dave Alvin, Bob Dylan and Alice Cooper. He’s contributed guitar licks to numerous movie soundtracks, including the Johnny Cash film “Walk the Line.” He also co-produced a couple of albums with Tom Waits.

Music starts at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Call (626) 398-7917.
