Apparently artist Carole Anne Kaufman whistles as well in Japanese as she does in English, because Kaufman has just captured the title of Women’s International Whistling Grande Champion for 2008.
Having traveled all the way to Tokyo for the event, Kaufman views her victory as icing on the cake of an all-around marvelous experience.
Before this week’s competition, Kaufman had competed only in the United States, so the opportunity to whistle abroad made her feel like the ambassador of a constantly growing musical genre.
“Japan is the perfect blend of East and West, old and new,” Kaufman wrote in an email from Japan. Kaufman’s whistling talents were featured in the June 12 edition of the Pasadena Weekly.
“Competing there meant stepping up to the plate to present a truly professional and moving experience for all involved.”
When Kaufman returns to California, she is determined to maintain the momentum behind this new wave of whistling.
“I am so excited and proud to represent American whistlers. The San Gabriel Valley is now an epicenter for world-class musical whistling,” Kaufman said. Now that the competition is over, Kaufman will rest her lips for a short while before performing in a concert in Osaka.
“It is a thrill to be a part of musical history,” Kaufman wrote. “Whistling is an art form that has gone unnoticed for far too long.”
