A 'killer' band at Taix
By John Sollenberger 11/20/2008
If you want to catch a “killer” band, you might check out the Tulsa Skull Swingers Wednesday night at Taix.
The classy Echo Park French restaurant seems an unlikely spot for a scary rock band, but the place boasts a Wednesday through Saturday music schedule in the lounge area. Halloween may have passed, but the Tulsa Skull Swingers celebrate the holiday all year, dressing up in wild ghostly costumes, complete with ghost stories, stage blood and ribald humor.
The indie band plays a ghoulish goulash of old-school garage, surf and what they term “scare-o-billy” rock. Songs about death include numbers like “It’s Dead” and “Certain Death.” They’re joined onstage by the Go Go Ghouls, with the “Rope of Donuts.” If you eat a donut off the rope without using your hands, you win a free kick in the ass, according to the band’s Web site. Sounds like a great way to start off the Thanksgiving holiday.
Danny B. Harvey opens at 10 p.m. followed by Tulsa Skull Swingers at 11 p.m. at Taix, 1911 Sunset Blvd., Echo Park. Call (213) 484-1265.
