A river runs through him

Crooner Andy Williams uses musical accompaniment to discuss his new book

By John Sollenberger 10/14/2009

For more than 60 years, Andy Williams’ smooth crooning style has endeared him to countless millions. Wednesday night, you can see an out-of-the-ordinary performance in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium, where Williams will discuss his new book, “Moon River & Me,” with mellow piano accompaniment, followed by a book signing. The title refers to his smash early 1960s hit, “Moon River.”

The book recounts his life’s work, from beginnings in Wall Lake, Iowa, to the success he celebrates today. Williams started singing with his brothers in the Williams Brothers Quartet, which soon became a hit on the radio in the 1940s. In the ’50s Williams, now solo, moved into TV, appearing on Steve Allen’s “Tonight Show.” He also worked the nightclub circuit.

Williams went on to star in his own TV variety show in the 1960s, and then became a headliner in Las Vegas for some 20 years. In 1992, he opened Andy Williams Moon River Theatre in Branson Mo., which presents major musical acts.

Over the years, Williams released a string of records, 18 of which went gold. Three went platinum.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Beckman Auditorium on the Caltech campus, 323 S. Michign Ave., Pasadena. Admission is free, but tickets are limited.
Call (626) 395-4652.
