An enchanting evening at Caltech

By John Sollenberger 09/04/2008

For those in the mood for a somewhat unusual entertainment experience, the Caltech Folk Music Society promises an evening of story and song Saturday with Celtic harpist Patrick Ball and The Medieval Beasts performing “The Flame of Love — The Legend of Tristan and Iseult.”

Ball, a mesmerizing storyteller, is one of the world’s top Celtic harpists. He recounts this dramatic tale backed by his instrument and the talents of Shira Kammen on vielle, medieval harp and vocals, plus Tim Rayborn on lute, plaltery, medieval harp and vocals. Together, the three musicians are known as The Medieval Beasts.

“The Legend of Tristan and Iseult” is a 12th-century story filled with love, magic, music and death that promises to deliver one enchanted evening.

The performance starts at 8 p.m. at Dabney Lounge on the Caltech campus, 1200 E. California Blvd., Pasadena. Call (626) 395-4652.
