Double Shot Of Bluegrass
Time May throws down with Murphy’s Flaw at Altadena’s Coffee Gallery
By John Sollenberger 01/21/2010
ENJOY A NIGHT OF BLUEGRASS WHEN ACOUSTIC GUITAR PICKER extraordinaire Time May and Murphy’s Flaw take the stage Sunday at Altadena’s Coffee Gallery Backstage.
Formerly based in Nashville, May, whose performing credits are the stuff of envy, now beats the bluegrass boards in LA. He was the guitarist on Charlie Daniels’ recording “I’ll Fly Away,” nominated for the Best Country Instrumental Performance Grammy in 2005. Now he’s appearing regularly with Mike Snyder at the Grand Ole Opry, but has also toured with stellar industry figures as Patty Loveless and John Cowan.
Murphy’s Flaw performs with traditional bluegrass instruments, including guitar, upright bass, banjo, mandolin and fiddle. The band has been winning audiences over with its fast-paced delivery at shows from clubs to private parties around LA for the past several years.
They keep audiences laughing, too, injecting a good dose of self-deprecating humor into the act. (Their Web site says they were thrown together as terms of their parole and that “Murphy’s Flaw performing bluegrass is like cows performing methane.”) But their chops are dead serious, so good that the band has won the prestigious Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest several times. Music starts at 7 p.m. Sunday at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Call (626) 398-7917.
