Facing the Future

Pasadena’s vibrant service community provides the support needed to improve our lives

As you gaze at the vast courtyard of the Great Plaza the Mayan shaman has shown you, an intense force whisks you both away to another time and place you do not recognize. It is a dimly lit room in which a man sits bent over his work. As you approach, you see it is a scribe, sitting cross legged and wearing a sarong. The scribes were the means by which kingdoms were made, for it was they who displayed important information about the triumphs of the kings for all the public to see.
Mayan culture revered them, understanding that they performed an extraordinary service to the entire community. Now, thousands of years later, it is the work of scribes and similar artisans that give people a glimpse into the everyday real lives of the Mayans, what they cared about and did.
Similarly, area service providers do what it takes to deliver us from our troubles — toothaches, flat tires, laugh lines and bad hair days — and return us to our busy days with as little interruption as possible. It’s the dentists, attorneys, personal trainers, nail technicians and realtors who earn their livelihoods by making our concerns and desires their own. Though most of their work goes on behind the scenes, it is those in the service industry who support us and give us the time and peace of mind we need to be our better selves and face the future, whatever it may bring.

Don’t let the recent crackdown on LA-area pot dispensaries scare you away from exploring medical marijuana as an alternate (and legal) form of pain alleviation. A licensed physician for 35 years, Dr. Barnes began his career as an anesthetist before finding pot to be an effective, and much safer, alternative to pharmacological treatment. Affiliated with the California Medical Marijuana Program and operating near the Medical Cannabis Caregivers Training Center, Barnes ensures honest, professional evaluations.

Ewing Architects, a firm that’s served the community since 1972. “We have experience in designing numerous building types, including custom residential, multi-family and senior housing, equestrian, resort and recreational, religious and educational, civic and municipal, retail and restaurants, theaters, auditoriums and entertainment venues,” explains President Douglas Ewing. Last year, Ewing was inducted into the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows, an honor reserved for those who’ve made significant contributions to architecture and society.

Dolphin Rentals long service in Pasadena began in 1941, when Carl and Mary Ellen Dolphin opened a private ambulance service and medical equipment rental business. When the couple retired in the mid-’60s, the business split, with son Joseph taking over the ambulance service and son Patrick overseeing rentals. Patrick expanded the company menu to include party equipment rentals and today Dolphin provides tables, chairs, dance floors, concession machines and more — whatever you need to turn a plan into a par-tay!

The owners of Le Studio Pilates work hard to create an atmosphere that promotes serenity and tranquility, because they know that when it comes to exercises that promote well-being, Pilates takes the (fat free, sugar free, gluten free) cake. So the next time you are on the floor in the shape of a quivering, barely there “V” doing micro crunches, remember the tranquility of fitting into skinny jeans that awaits.

Regency Park

In the classic ’80s sitcom “Golden Girls,” a stern-faced Dorothy used to keep her troublemaking mother Sophia in line by threatening to return her to Shady Pines, a retirement home known for its negligence. Had there been an environment like Pasadena’s The Fair Oaks by Regency Park in Miami, however, Sophia never would have left. This luxurious independent and assisted living senior community abounds with amenities, like daily housekeeping, an in-house movie theater and restaurant-style dining. Thanks, but no thanks, Dorothy.

The staff at Love Hearing Service knows this, and so approach the work of administering hearing tests and evaluations for hearing aids with an ear tuned to perfection.

Anomaly Body Piercing Studio

760 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena

(626) 793-8930 | www.anomaly2.com

Since the days when tattoos in America were isolated to the realms of prisoners and old sea dogs, there has been an amazing resurgence of an art form that, in other cultures, already occupies a religious status. Part of that resurgence means more angry Tweety Birds and misspelled Chinese words of wisdom. But it also means more people creating symbols of personal significance and bookmarking important milestones in their lives. Artists at Anomaly understand that, whether it’s a tattoo, barbell or stud, every act of ornamentation is an act of freedom and self expression.

There are many benefits to being a pet caregiver — unconditional love, warmth in winter, endless entertainment — but when your pooch or purry gets sick, all those benefits fly right out the window. They’re refusing food, curled up in a pathetic ball or not using the bathroom. They’re scared, or flea ridden and won’t get in the pet taxi to save their lives. It’s a nightmare, save for the presence of Foothill Veterinary Hospital, which has walk-in hours that operate on a first come, first served basis. It’s an utter blessing for all creatures great and small (and their human companions!)

The long-practiced art of yoga has traditionally been associated with peaceniks and, well, yogis. Today, by contrast, you’ll find it at your local YMCA, senior center or Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. And there are as many varieties as there are facilities that hold classes, so what makes Bikram (hot) special? Practitioners swear that the heat makes the body more suppliant and receptive to the deep messages the Hatha yoga poses deliver. If you’ve got a yen to rid yourself of toxins and learn healthy breathing and you can take the 105 degree temps, check it out at Pasadena’s favorite spot.

This is a long and thought out list. I just moved to Pasadena and this site has helped me a lot. I went to Douglas auto and body shop and they took good care of me. My car was fixed sooner than expected so that was a good surprise. I would like to provide an honorable mention to the dental circle. Although not in Pasadena, they're just a few minutes away. I know everyone there and they do whatever it takes to make sure you leave happy.
