Author Sandra Tsing Loh brings her humorous rage to the stage at All Saints Church

By Carl Kozlowski 08/14/2008

MAs a humorist and radio commentator, Sandra Tsing Loh has given voice to a new breed of mom: the hip and wisecracking voice of the cultural vanguard who believes it’s just as important to raise a creative child as a “good” one. And in her new book “Mother on Fire: A True Motherf%#$@ Story about Parenting!” she brings her trademark blend of humorous rage again to the page as she details the year her daughter reached kindergarten age and turned her life upside down all over again.

To wit, starting school sparked Loh’s “year of fire” as she scrambled to find an affordable private school and save her daughter from the hell of the public education system. The attendant pressures of fame and family caught up with her as she made national news by accidentally speaking the “F” word on the radio airwaves, lost her radio job and then fought to reclaim it before booting her therapist out of her life.

Loh first vented these experiences in her long-running solo performance piece “Mother on Fire,” which ran for months on end in Los Angeles, but now she’s collected it all in a new book that’s sure to please fans of other NPR humorists like David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell. And Loh is so popular that she’ll be holding her discussion and signing at 7 p.m. Tuesday in All Saints Church rather than the cozier confines of Vroman’s Bookstore. While people are allowed to attend for free if they buy a copy of the book at Vroman’s, those who don’t buy the book will have to pay $5 to attend.

Sandra Tsing Loh will discuss and sign “Mother On Fire” at 7 p.m. Tuesday All Saints Church at 132 N. Euclid Ave., Pasadena. The book and ticket can be acquired at Vroman’s Bookstore, 695 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena. Call Vroman’s at (626) 449-5320 or visit www.vromansbookstore.com
