Financing an 'Uprising'
Popular program launches Indiegogo drive to build TV studio at KPFK headquarters

For the past 12 years Sonali Kolhatkar has been calling attention to progressive issues as the host of KPFK FM’s daily radio show “Uprising.” The mix of “independent news analysis, investigation, education, artistic expression and activism in the public interest” has developed a passionate following.
Kolhatkar was recently given the opportunity to adapt part of the station’s facilities for television production, with the goal of producing a televised version of “Uprising” for Free Speech TV, a politically progressive network that is carried by Direct TV and the Dish Network, and is also available via Roku streaming video devices.
The catch is that Kolhatkar and her forces have to raise $60,000 by May 1, and as a result, they have launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise the funds. As of April 11, the campaign had reached nearly $15,000, while attracting endorsements from Chris Hedges, Mimi Kennedy, Norman Solomon, Blasé Bonpane, David Barsamian, Erin Aubrey Kaplan and Pilar Marrero.
“It’s very exciting, because when we start, I will be the first woman of color host on their cable channel,” says Kolhatkar. “We know we have a large audience, and it’s motivating them to go make a donation that’s the hard part. We mostly like to go where most of the media isn’t looking or bring on guests who don’t usually get airtime but we feel they have valuable things to say. We’re trying to get people excited about the world and inspire people to action not just passively but by being actively engaged.”
“Uprising” can be heard from 8 to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday on KPFK 90.7 FM or kpfk.org. To donate, visit Indiegogo.com/projects/uprisingtv.
