Mojacar Flamenco fires up Coffee Gallery
By John Sollenberger 09/27/2012
Mojacar Flamenco, appearing Friday at Altadena’s Coffee Gallery Backstage, was born during an artists’ retreat in Southern Spain in 1996, when guitarist Stephen Dick, who had written a series of works blending traditional flamenco with Latin jazz, and dancer Katerina Tomás were asked to perform an evening of music and dance.
The group has received a variety of honors and awards, including eight grants from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and two LA Treasures Awards from the Los Angeles County Arts Commission for its work as artists, scholars and instructors.
Mojacar Flamenco has produced several discs, including instructional recordings to enlighten the masses. While Dick and Tomás work with some of the top flamenco artists in the area, Friday’s performance will be a pared-down lineup of just the duo.

Music starts at 8 p.m. Friday at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Tickets are $18. Call (626) 798-6236 or visit coffeegallery.com.
