From Austin with love
Caltech sees the many sides of Eliza Gilkyson
By John Sollenberger 09/09/2010
Caltech Folk Music Society presents a special show Saturday night as singer, songwriter and guitarist Eliza Gilkyson performs, accompanied by guitarist Nina Gerber.
Gilkyson, a Grammy nominee from Austin, Texas, is best known for insightful storytelling. She’s an activist as well, performing music that is politically relevant (she was a strong critic of George W. Bush).
The music also contains some tasty hooks, whether performing solo and “unplugged” or with a band. Besides touring the country, she’s been featured on National Public Radio numerous times. Her live work has included stints with Townes Van Zandt, Nanci Griffith, Willie Nelson and numerous others. Her voice is downright beautiful, and her songs display a wide range of moods, from the upbeat to the introspective. Her latest disc is “Beautiful World.”
The show starts at 8 p.m. Saturday at Beckman Institute Auditorium (not to be confused with the larger Beckman Auditorium) on the Caltech campus, 1200 E. California Blvd., Pasadena. Call (626) 395-4652 or visit folkmusic.caltech.edu. Tickets are $18 for adults, $5 for children under 12 and for Caltech students.
