Get lucky at the Autry

Get lucky at the Autry

By John Sollenberger 07/24/2008

Summer nights sizzle again tonight in Griffith Park, when the Autry National Center features some of the top Latin and salsa bands in LA Thursday nights through August. This is a real family dance party, with a special dance floor just for the kids, while the grown-ups cut a rug of their own.

A taco and drink bar serves up cool margaritas for the hot evening. If you think you can’t dance, a free lesson comes with the deal. The museum and store are open until 8 p.m., so you can view the latest exhibits or pick up souvenirs.

Tonight, Lucky 7 heats it up. The band’s sound is inspired by the multi-ethnic music mix of Spanish Harlem of the 1950s and ’60s and the high-energy, classic mambo. The vibraphone-driven sound echoes old-school greats such as Jimmy Sabater, Cheo Feliciano and Joe Cuba. You can hear hints of Cuban son, African-American jazz and Puerto Rican soul.

Music starts at 6 p.m. at the Autry National Center, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Griffith Park. The café and bar open at 5 p.m. Call (323) 667-2000.
