Going the distance'
Trumpet master Nolan Shaheed brings it home to redwhite+bluezz
By John Sollenberger 04/25/2013
A music career is more of a long-distance race than a sprint for those who are serious about making a living making music. This is especially true for trumpeter Nolan Shaheed, who’s appearing Friday night at redwhite+bluezz, at its new location in Pasadena’s Playhouse District.
The Pasadena native boasts a long career in the world of jazz, possessing a resume that includes some outstanding accomplishments which might make other players green with envy. Shaheed has served as musical director for Marvin Gaye, once held the lead trumpet position for Count Basie and worked with an incredible roster of luminaries that includes Natalie Cole, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Phil Collins, Carole King, David Byrne and Tom Waits, to name just a few.
Coincidentally, this horn ace shouldn’t be in danger of running out of breath while blowing that trumpet; he’s also a long distance runner in his spare time, regularly winning races in the mile, 800 and 1,500 meters.

Music starts at 9 p.m. Friday at redwhite+bluezz, 37 S. El Molino Ave., Pasadena. No cover. Call (626) 792-4441 or visit redwhitebluezz.com.
