WITH THE PLANET SPEWING DEVASTATING ASH FROM A VOLCANO IN ICELAND, NOT TO mention the infinite array of manmade pollution already threatening the world, there appears to be no better time than now to remember how important it is to take care of the earth.

On Saturday, the city of Pasadena does its part by hosting the eighth annual Greening the Earth Day and Armory Family Arts Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Armory Center for the Arts.

Featuring everything from an alternative-energy vehicle display to live entertainment to live animals and a bevy of educational booths to go with a one-of-a-kind swap meet held across the street in Memorial Park, the day should create quite an impression on locals —especially those with families eager to educate their children.

Host Val Zavala, anchor of the KCET series “Life and Times,” will spotlight organizations and everyday items that promote green living, energy and water efficiency. Attention will also be paid to composting, organic foods and green building design.

In addition, attendees can learn more about the city’s bicycling, recycling and conservation programs, while those on bikes can go on a tour of green projects around the city led from the park by Cyclists Inciting Change through Live Exchange, CICLE, at 11 a.m.
There are also plenty of artistic ways for attendees to enjoy themselves while learning, with the Armory featuring CreAIRtor, a piece of installation art by environmental artist Doron Gazi that consists of huge vinyl tubes inflated by electric fans that are solar-powered by Acro Energy.

Meanwhile, “The Story of Stuff,” a 20-minute documentary on American consumerism, will be played continuously from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Armory’s Community Room.

Add dancing to an assortment of live musical acts outside the Armory, and a special swap meet at the park in which goods will be bartered completely without cash, festival-goers will be swimming in options on how to improve their worlds.

The Greening the Earth Day and Armory Family Arts Festival take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Armory Center for the Arts, 145 N. Raymond Ave., Pasadena. Admission is free.
