The Pasadena Community Foundation and the Tournament of Roses Foundation awarded grants last week totaling more than $730,000 to local nonprofit agencies for everything from youth education programs to job assistance and helping the homeless.
During their annual Local Heroes celebration on June 5, the Pasadena Community Foundation divvied $630,000 in awards among 45 area nonprofit agencies, eight of them — including the Neighbors Acting Together Helping All afterschool program in Northwest Pasadena, Union Station Homeless Services, Planned Parenthood, Pasadena City College and Villa Esperanza — receiving $10,000 or more.
The Pasadena Conservatory of Music, also a $10,000 recipient, brought 13-year-old guitar student Noah Kim to perform during the celebration at the University Club.
At the Tournament of Roses Foundation Grant Award Reception on June 3, Foundation President Denise Nelson Nash presented more than $102,000 in grants to 21 local nonprofits in fields such as performing and visual arts, athletics and leadership development.
Recipients of grants from $1,900 to $10,000 include Women at Work, which will use the money to run meetings and seminars for volunteers, and the San Gabriel-based Asian Youth Center’s basketball program for at-risk youth.
Meanwhile, the coming week offers at least two chances for party-minded people to support worthy causes.
