'Ho, Ho,Hoey'
Christmasy Gary Hoey proves he’s ‘Only Human’ at ABC
By John Sollenberger 12/10/2009
NOW IN THE MIDDLE OF A NATIONAL TOUR, BLUES ROCKER GARY HOEY AND HIS BAND TAKE TIME OUT FRIDAY TO PLAY A few sets at the Arcadia Blues Club. In a recording career that started in 1993, Hoey has released 16 albums, which include five
top-20 hits on the Billboard charts.
Possessing a diverse sound, Hoey has won critical acclaim over those years as one of the top guitarists in the business. His “Only Human” has a clean, power-pop, almost anthemic sound. Then again, the down-tempo number “Truth,” from his latest CD, “American Made,” is classic blues. On that same disc, he does a really cool, grinding rock, guitar-riff-laden cover of the early ’80s Red Rider hit, “Lunatic Fringe.”
In time for the holidays, he’s also released a popular “Ho! Ho! Hoey” series of Christmas CDs, featuring a burning instrumental “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and a sentimental version of “The First Noel.”
Music starts at 8 p.m. Friday at Arcadia Blues Club, 16 E. Huntington Drive, Arcadia. Call (626) 447-9349.
