Hot and Haunting
The Red Skunk Band cranks up its musical time machine at the Barkley
By John Sollenberger 08/21/2014
South Pasadena comes alive in a swinging way when the Red Skunk Band visits the Barkley Saturday night.
The group plays a hot, toe-tapping musical blend featuring influences that include Django Reinhardt’s signature gypsy jazz, 1930s-style European jazz and American roots artists, among them Squirrel Nut Zippers, Louis Armstrong and the Royal Crown Revue.
The band’s newest release is “Hot and Haunting,” and its live show revolves around the album’s theme contrasting the carefree, red-hot style of the swing era of the early 20th century and a powerful sound that has characterized Red Skunk’s style since its earliest recordings.
