'I'm not bitter'

Country comedy and soulful songs await at Coffee Gallery

By John Sollenberger 06/11/2009

A double bill of fun awaits at the Coffee Gallery Backstage Friday night as singer/songwriter/producer Kacey Jones shares the bill with Tracy Newman and The Reinforcements.

Jones (pictured) has blended country humor with music for a couple of decades. She formed Ethel and the Shameless Hussies in Nashville in the late ’80s, which earned a Comedy Act of the Year award on MCA Records. She then produced cult star Kinky Friedman’s critically acclaimed “Pearls in the Snow” disc, which featured Dwight Yoakam, Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Lyle Lovett and Delbert McClinton.

She contributed songs to the award-winning cult flick “Sordid Lives.” Her latest album is the hilarious “Donald Trump’s Hair” (on IGO Records), a follow-up to “Every Man I Love is Either Married, Gay or Dead.” Past songs include titles like “I Hate Your Lousy, Rotten, Stinkin’ Guts, But I’m Not Bitter.” She’ll be accompanied by guitarist Dorian Michael.

Next up is Tracy Newman and the Reinforcements. Newman is a multimedia success story. Besides singing and songwriting, she’s produced and written for TV shows, including “Cheers,” “The Nanny” and “Ellen,” for which she wrote the infamous “coming out” episode. She’s the co-creator of the hit comedy “According to Jim.” Newman was a founding member of LA comedy troupe The Groundlings, launch pad for the career of numerous comedians, including her sister, Laraine Newman.

Tracy’s music recalls a different time, with ’40’s style harmonies and thought-provoking tunes exuding a happy feeling. Her debut CD is “Tracy Newman and the Reinforcements.”

Music starts at 8 p.m. Friday at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Call (626) 398-7917.
