Caltech Jazz Fest features a stellar roster
By John Sollenberger 04/12/2012
Soak up all the jazz you can stand when the Caltech Jazz Festival takes over Gates Patio Saturday.
The day features the talented student musicians of both Caltech jazz bands, conducted by William Bing. The roster also includes guest artists Zucky and the Gang, The Julie Miwa Quartet and The Nick Broten Band.
Headlining the show is bass clarinetist Bennie Maupin. He’s worked with a constellation of stars over his long career. Notably, he provided the sweet sounds on Miles Davis’ classic album “Bitches Brew” and laid down tracks on some of Davis’ other discs. He was a founding member of Herbie Hancock’s bands, The Headhunters and Mwandishi. Along the way, he’s performed with big names, including Chick Corea, Roy Haynes and Horace Silver, and he’s produced a library of albums of his own. His current group is the Bennie Maupin Ensemble.

Guests are welcome to bring blankets and picnics and enjoy a day of great music for free in the open air.
