LA punk founder rocks Mr. T's
By John Sollenberger 11/20/2008
As England’s punk movement grew in the mid-to-late 1970s, the kids in LA caught onto the idea and imported the sound here. Soon, homegrown bands were making musical revolution and numerous acts emerged. One of those was The Minutemen, formed by bassist Mike Watt. Watt never really stopped making music, and he’ll perform with his latest incarnation, Mike Watt & the Secondmen Saturday night at Mr. T’s Bowl in Highland Park.
Watt and The Minutemen released several discs between 1980 and 1985 until the death of guitarist D. Boon. Since then, Watt has performed in Firehose, went solo in 1995 with an LP featuring guest appearances by members of the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Soul Asylum and the Screaming Trees. He then played a stint in Porno for Pyros before forming the bass-organ-drum trio the Secondmen in 2002.
In addition, Chip Kinman’s PCH performs, featuring former members of the Dils and Rank & File.
Music starts at 9 p.m. Saturday at Mr. T’s Bowl, 5621 1/2 Figueroa St., Highland Park. Call (323) 256-7561.
