Little Miss Dangerous
By Carl Kozlowski 09/24/2009
NO ONE COULD EVER ACCUSE KATHY GRIFFIN OF BEING SHY, OR POLITICALLY correct, or in possession one bit of verbal self-restraint when it comes to recklessly trashing some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.
Yet it’s that very brazenness that has helped Griffin carve out an almost unprecedented career niche as a lifelong character actress who has become a comedy megastar because of her willingness to gossip about anyone or any showbiz situation imaginable. And after riding her Bravo reality series “My Life on the D-List” to an Emmy win, Griffin has finally put pen to paper and written her memoir, the archly titled “Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin.”
Covering her life with a mix of surprising emotional depth and stunningly sarcastic candor, Griffin recounts growing up ugly (her word) and the battles she faced to make it in Hollywood as a result. But her ability to vent with humorous venom onstage kicked open doors to success for her and eventually made her one of the most divisive figures in comedy. But, hey, she’s famous — and to Griffin, that’s what really matters.
Spilling the beans on perpetually troubled comedian Andy Dick’s outrageous backstage behavior, recounting her bizarre and short-lived fling with Jack Black, or dishing countless Brooke Shields stories gleaned from her four years as Shields’ costar on the NBC sitcom “Suddenly Susan,” Griffin manages to make us laugh on nearly every page.
On Wednesday, she’ll be signing the book at Vroman’s Bookstore. It’s bound to be a hoot, with a high probability that she will give a highly creative reading or bring the roof down with an impromptu performance of her latest celebrity dish. Either way, it’s going to be a packed house and a very good time.
Kathy Griffin will discuss and sign “Official Book Club Selection” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Vroman’s Bookstore, 695 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena. Call (626) 449-5320 or visit vromans.com.
