'Love's the thing'
The 88 wraps Spaceland residency
By John Sollenberger 09/24/2009
IF YOU HAVEN’T CAUGHT THE 88 YET, TUESDAY NIGHT WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO do so, as they end their month-long residency at spaceland IN Silver Lake. These good-looking young LA rockers have been tearing up the airwaves with their catchy pop-rock sound since forming in 2003. While some aspects of their sound hearken back to old-school ’60s influences, they’re definitely new-school in their marketing approach. They created a splash recently by recording their latest single, “Love is the Thing,” on an iPhone.
Their music has been played on TV shows including “The OC,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “One Tree Hill,” “The Real World” and “Weeds,” and the band even appeared on an episode of “How I Met Your Mother.” In a salute to the old-school side, The 88 covered Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” for the Sarah Jessica Parker comedy, “Failure to Launch.” In addition, they’ve landed in regular rotation on Santa Monica’s edgy KCRW-FM and have also opened concerts for such bands as The B-52s, Smashing Pumpkins and 311. This is a great opportunity to see them up close.
Music starts at 9 p.m. Tuesday. Besides The 88, Pierre De Reeder, Quazar and the Bamboozled and Oh Darling perform. Spaceland is at 1717 Silver Lake Blvd., Los Angeles. Call (323) 661-4380.
