Mad dogs and blues
Black Market III scorches ABC
By John Sollenberger 05/30/2013
If you’re in the market for some foot-stomping, all-American blues rock, you might want to check out Black Market III at Arcadia Blues Club Saturday night.
This red-hot trio was formed by Scottie “Mad Dog” Blinn, who fronted the award-winning San Diego band The Mississippi Mudsharks. Black Market III focused its energies on kicking out soul-stomping blues, American roots music and punk in a style reminiscent of the Clash and Social Distortion. Mix in covers of some of the more obscure songs by Tom Waits, Wayne Walker, Hank Williams, Sr., Leadbelly and Dead Weather and you have a sound that’s at once hard to categorize but that always rocks the house.
In fact, the repertoire has worked well enough for the rockers that last year the San Diego Reader tapped the effort as one of the top 10 bands to watch for 2012. Music blog SD Rock ‘n’ Roll hailed BMIII’s initial, full-length CD “Songs that Shake the Cage” as one of the top five discs of 2012.
