US News & World Report magazine has determined that Marshall Fundamental Secondary School is one of the top high schools in the country when it comes to preparing kids for college.

Assessing some 21,000 schools nationwide, the magazine broke winners into gold, silver and bronze categories. Marshall was awarded a silver medal based on its academic performance and college readiness in the 2006-07 school year.
“We owe the strength of our academic program to the hard work of staff, students and parents,” said Principal Keith Derrick. “It is an honor to celebrate the success of Marshall's outstanding team.”

About 1,800 sixth- through 12th-grade students are enrolled in the school, which offers several college and career preparation programs, including 15 advanced placement courses.

US News & World Report compiled the list by examining 2006-07 data to determine whether the schools served students well in meeting state proficiency standards and preparing them for college-level work. Using Advanced Placement Index test data as an indicator of achievement, Marshall, which posted an API score of 731 that year, scored a 37.9 on the magazine’s college readiness index, and ranked with 505 other schools in the silver category.

The top 100 schools won gold medals, and 1,321 high schools in 48 states earned bronze medals.
“Congratulations to Marshall for winning this prestigious honor,” Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Edwin Diaz said in a prepared statement. “Marshall does a great job of preparing all of its students for the future, not just the ones who are college-bound. It offers multiple pathways to success.”
