'Peace through Music' targets autism awareness

By Carl Kozlowski 09/04/2008

September marks the return of an annual Pasadena tradition: a Peace Through Music concert presented by longtime local activist Nat Nehdar and the Pasadena Human Relations Commission.

This year's concert will focus attention on autism awareness and feature nearly a dozen musical acts and a speech by former major league pitcher Jim Gott, the father of two autistic children.

This latest cause joins a distinguished list of topics that Nehdar has sought to focus attention on throughout the 10-year history of the shows, ranging from honoring the victims of the deadly Columbine High School shooting rampage and of Sept. 11, to the genocide in Darfur and murdered journalist Daniel Pearl.

"Autism awareness has become a very important topic throughout the US these last few months, and we decided to inform people because there are certain parents who do not know the symptoms of autism and think their children just misbehave," said Nehdar. "The sooner they find out a child is diagnosed, the sooner there can be improvement in everyone's lives."

Tickets for the event are $20 at the door, or $10 for seniors and students and free for kids 10 and under.

The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at First Church of the Nazarene of Pasadena, 3700 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., Pasadena.
