Blessed bounty
Today should be particularly special for Pasadena dining enthusiasts — for not only is one of downtown LA’s classiest restaurants, Roy’s, opening another outpost here, but it will also be hosting a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony for both the business and patrons attending its grand opening celebration.
Famed chef Roy Yamaguchi, co-founder and co-owner of the Roy’s international chain, will be on hand with his original partner and fellow chef Gordon Hopkins to oversee the night’s festivities, starting with a 5:30 p.m. blessing led by a Kumu, or wise teacher. A Ti Leaf, a traditional leaf from Hawaii, will be untied as the doors open to Roy’s guests. The blessing is intended to bring “good fortune and great wealth” while warding off “evil spirits.”
No doubt the blessing will also usher in some great-tasting food as well, focused on Hawaiian Fusion cuisine that weds European sauces and bold Asian spices in tasty combinations with seafood. Proceeds help benefit the Hillsides home for foster children.
Roy’s is at 641 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena.
