Kan Wakan brings eclectic style to One Colorado
By John Sollenberger 06/20/2014
Saturday night brings an opportunity to catch a rising group of stars when Kan Wakan lights up KCRW’s Summer Nights series at One Colorado.
The band’s musical vision is striking in its breadth. Kan Wakan’s adventurous mix of psychedelic soul, electronica, noir jazz, 1960s influences and orchestral pop plants it squarely in the realm of modern pop’s most inventive new acts. It’s a formula that is both original and contemporary.
The LA band emerged in 2012 as the brainchild of composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Gueorgui I. Linev. The Bulgarian-born musician set out to create instrumental music inspired by his passion for classical minimalism, but the addition of singer Kristianne Bautista and producer/guitarist Peter Potyondy caused the project to bloom in scope, creating the current act.
The band’s debut disc is “Moving On.” Visit them at kanwakan.com.
Music starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at One Colorado, 41 Hugus Alley, Pasadena. DJ Marion Hodges opens. Admission is free. Call (626) 564-1066 or visit onecolorado.com.
