NAACP showers praise on Playhouse

Although the 18th annual NAACP Theater Awards ceremony on June 30 will be taking place in Beverly Hills, the event will be very Pasadena-centric.
With 26 nominations for five different plays — “Defiance,” “A Matter of Honor,” “Sister Act: the Musical,” “Cutting Up” and “Ray Charles Live” — the Pasadena Playhouse has received more nominations than any other theater.
Playhouse Artistic Director Sheldon Epps received a nomination for directing “Ray Charles Live,” which — along with “Sister Act” and “A Matter of Honor” — is up for best overall production.
Pasadena’s The Theatre @ Boston Court was also recognized for excellence among theaters with fewer than 100 seats, receiving six nominations for the play “Gilgamesh,” including one for best production.
