Pasadena Civic Ballet brings 'The Little Mermaid' to life

Shrimp, rainbow fish, sea anemones, evil crabs, starfish, sea horses, dolphins and even a giant octopus will all come to life this weekend — not under the sea, but onstage at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse.
That’s when the Pasadena Civic Ballet Co. celebrates its 10th anniversary under the artistic direction of Diane de Franco Browne, Tania Grafos and Zoe Vidalakis with a rousing performance of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.”
Featuring close to 150 dancers, the show spotlights an innovative technique known as “tissu,” an aerial acrobatic technique performed high above the ground and involving long lengths of fabric used for wrapping, hanging and dropping in a spectacular style, created by the world-famous Cirque du Soleil.
The PCB also offers a pre-show Under the Sea Tea at which guests can enjoy fairy tales, sandwiches, sweets and lemonade before each show.
“The Little Mermaid” will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, 320 S. Mission Drive, San Gabriel. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $22.50 for children 10 and under. The tea, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday, is $20. Call (626) 792-0873.
