Pasadena joins 'Green Cities' club
By Joe Piasecki 02/07/2008
Pasadena City Council members have pledged once again to make every reasonable effort in the movement to prevent global warming, reduce waste and do less overall damage to the planet.
On Monday, city leaders adopted the Green Cities California Sustainability Resolution, which forms a coalition of cities with collective environmental goals.
Initial goals include the use of recycled paper in all municipal operations (which Pasadena accomplished did in December) and developing a way to offset the carbon emissions produced by air travel related to city business, one idea being to plant trees.
Joining with Pasadena are Los Angeles, Berkeley, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica and Marin County.
The push to make Pasadena a "green city" began officially in September 2006, when City Council members unanimously adopted two agreements pledging to go far beyond ecological efforts required by state and federal officials.
The US Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement and the United Nations Green Cities Declaration and Urban Environmental Accords call for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions equal to or better than the Kyoto Protocols and set goals in the areas of energy conservation, water conservation, waste reduction, urban design, nature preservation, transportation and environmental health.
