Pasadena remembers
By Carl Kozlowski 05/22/2008
As a stark reminder of war’s highest cost the Pasadena chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America will lead a coalition of community groups in a special Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park in Pasadena.
The focus of the event will be the unveiling of Gold Star banners bearing the names of each Pasadena resident killed in action in Iraq. The soldiers’ names will be read by Pasadena Interim City Manager Bernard K. Melekian, and their banners will in the near future be mounted to light poles surrounding the park.
Color guards composed of Junior ROTC cadets from Pasadena, John Muir and Blair high schools will present the colors. Also during the ceremony, the names of each soldier killed in action in both Iraq and Afghanistan will be announced as a bell tolls simultaneously.
The ceremony — sponsored by the city of Pasadena, Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion and Navy League — will close with “Taps” played by echoing buglers at opposite ends of the park, which is located on Raymond Avenue between Walnut and Holly streets. Call (626) 795-8141.
