Veteran music man David Tull swings into South Pas Friday
By John Sollenberger 05/28/2009
The Friday night jazz shows at South Pasadena Music Center and Conservatory have been featuring some of the area’s top talent, and this week is no exception with the David Tull Trio taking center stage.
Having logged more than 25 years on the scene as a drummer, Tull has revealed in recent years another side of his many talents — vocalist.
Since 2000, he’s toured frequently as both a drummer and singer with ace horn man Chuck Mangione. He’s also appeared with singer Cheryl Bentyne (of Manhattan Transfer), singing on two tracks of her disc, “Moonlight Serenade.” In fact, Bentyne was so taken by his talent that she named a song from the album “Tull Tales” in his honor.
Tull, who’s performed at hundreds of clubs and concerts around the world, has appeared with the Page Cavanaugh Trio, Jack Sheldon’s Quartet and Big Band, the Steve Huffsteter Big Band, the Les Brown Band of Renown, the Steve Allen Big Band and Trio and the LA Jazz Trio, among many others.
Tull’s newest album is “I Just Want to Get Paid.”
Music starts at 8 p.m. Friday at South Pasadena Music Center and Conservatory, 1509 Mission St., South Pasadena. Call (626) 403-2300.
