Picking with style
Shaun Hopper's finger style mastery goes on display at Coffee Gallery
By John Sollenberger 03/01/2012
Catch an acoustic master at work Sunday, when Shaun Hopper performs at Coffee Gallery Backstage.
Hopper is widely hailed in the industry as a fingerstyle guitarist, a technique of plucking the strings directly with the fingertips, fingertip picks or just fingernails. Without getting hung up in the technical aspects of the style, Hopper is a native of Georgia possessed of sounds that go far beyond the bluegrass, country and country rock for which the region is known.
Hopper has taken inspiration in legends like Chet Atkins, Andres Segovia, George Benson and Leo Kotke, and the result is a genre-blending style that boasts elements of folk, classical, pop, rock, Celtic, jazz and blues — a musical smorgasbord.
His latest CD is “Lower Case Letters.” Visit shaunhopper.com for the full low-down.
Music starts at 7 p.m. Sunday at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Tickets are $15. Call (626) 798-6236 or visit coffeegallery.com.
