Planning a sustainable future

Former CIA Director James Woolsey leads a lengthy list of influential thinkers, designers and corporate leaders expected to take part in the Art Center College of Design’s third annual Sustainability Summit, taking place Feb. 17 through 19 at the Pasadena Convention Center.
The event is designed to challenge students and civic leaders to devise more efficient and eco-friendly ways to move people and goods, all the while taking practical concerns such as safety and cost into account, according to the school’s Web site, artcenter.edu.
Speakers include Art Center and Caltech faculty, as well as top designers for General Motors and Toyota. Woolsey is a partner in Northern California-based VantagePoint Ventures, a company with holdings that include electric sports car makers Tesla Motors, solar power plant builders BrightSource Energy and more than a dozen other eco-tech companies.
Following the conference, Art Center plans to publish “Pasadena Principles of Sustainable Mobility,” a set of design guidelines for sustainable energy practices worldwide.
