Although USC got the glory for its 49-17 route of Illinois, there was another big winner on New Year's Day at the Rose Bowl: the planet.
Following the game, more than 81,000 beverage containers were collected from the stadium and sent to recycling centers instead of landfills, according to a press release from Pasadena's Public Works Department.
That's nearly six tons of plastic, glass and metal, and more than 2,300 pounds of cardboard collected from stadium vendors was recycled as well.
