Post-holiday blues
The 44s rock In the New Year at ABC
By John Sollenberger 12/31/2009
A LOT OF PEOPLE SUFFER FROM THE POST-HOLIDAY BLUES. THAT MAY NOT BE such a bad thing, especially if you get down in the dumps while you’re at Arcadia Blues Club.
Saturday night, you can start the New Year in a rocking way as The 44’s come in and shake the house. This blues, rock and roots band was formed in 2005 by East San Gabriel Valleyites Johnny Main on guitar and vocals and drummer JR Lozano. They’re joined by bassist Mike Turturro and harmonica ace Tex “Weeping Willow” Nakamura (formerly with War). Since their relatively recent (in blues years) formation, they’ve been burning up the local club landscape with a mix of hard, Chicago-style blues and good old rock and roll.
The band pulls influences from around the Americana music map — from the Blasters to the Red Devils, Los Lobos, the Vaughan brothers and, as they say on their Web site, “a little Crown, a dab of tequila and a pinch of Jack.” Look for their new, full-length disc coming soon, produced by Kid Ramos.
Bobby Bluehouse and the ABC house band open at 8 p.m. Saturday, followed by The 44’s at 10:30 p.m. at Arcadia Blues Club, 16 E. Huntington Drive, Arcadia. Call (626) 447-9349.
