Retro salsa heats up Granada

Retro salsa heats up Granada

By John Sollenberger 11/26/2008

Over the past few years, salsa music has gained increasing prominence and wider audiences, but the building blocks for its success were laid decades ago. On Saturday, LA-based The Echo Park Project heads east to Alhambra to heat up the dance floor at The Granada.

In 1970s New York, salsa came alive through radios, free concerts in Central Park and at clubs such as the Corso, the Ipanema, the Copacabana and Barney Googles, providing a solid base for acts that included Ray Barreto, Machito, Tipica 73, Celia Cruz and many others.

“This is my tribute to a time, an era, that will never be forgotten and that will always live on,” writes Carlo López, who formed The Echo Park Project, on the band’s Web site (theechoparkproject.com). The music really does live on in The Echo Park Project’s self-titled CD, but for the fullest experience put on your dancing shoes Saturday night.  — John Sollenberger

Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 10 p.m. Saturday at The Granada, 17 S. First St., Alhambra. Call (626) 227-2572.
