Robbie Fulks in rare local appearance

By John Sollenberger 06/19/2008

Those who like a blend of bluegrass, alt-country, folk and rock might stop by Coffee Gallery Backstage Sunday afternoon, when Chicago-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Robbie Fulks stops in for a set. Fulks rarely makes it out to the Golden State, and when he does, he usually plays bigger rooms, like McCabe’s and The Roxy. This will be a great opportunity for local fans to catch him in a close-up setting.

Fulks grew up influenced by bluegrass, eventually branching out into the sound he’s known for today. He’s also known for injecting a jabbing sense of humor into his gigs. One of his memorable songs is a sort of one-finger “salute” to his old stomping grounds of Nashville, “F*** This Town,” written for his 1997 disc, “South Mouth,” one of eight he’s released (his latest is “Revenge,” on Yep Roc Records). The inspiration was his struggle while under contract to a major publisher to produce something that tough music town might like. He mixes things up in an ear-pleasing way onstage, from funny to sentimental.

Music starts at 3 p.m. Sunday at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Call (626) 398-7917.
