Lately you can’t escape the sight of leering jack-o’-lanterns and elaborately decorated skeletons dancing across local store windows and front porches, all posted to commemorate Halloween and/or Dia de Los Muertos. Greater Pasadena is gearing up for some rocking freakouts this weekend. In the Playhouse District, Zona Rosa Caffe will be hosting its 15th annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration tonight — Thursday, Oct. 29 — with an art exhibit and live music. Art will be on display at the café through Nov. 8, but to catch a set by Cava, be sure to duck into the café’s cozy alley tonight by 7:30 p.m. Pounding out delightfully skewered Latinate rhythms astride an amplified cajon, Cava — more formally known as Claudia Gonzalez (sister of Quetzal frontwoman Martha Gonzalez) — is one of the most raucously irreverent originals to emerge from the area music scene in recent years.

One of two Buddyhead Halloween parties will also be happening tonight (the other’s taking place in Washington, DC) at the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock. Presented in conjunction with folks from the Fuck Yeah Fest, the 18-and-over headbanging bash will feature sets by the Night Marchers, Jail Weddings, SeaSpin and Night Horse, among others, and you get a discount at the door if you show up in costume.

Come Saturday afternoon, the kiddies will likely appreciate the wandering goblins and store-to-store trick-or-treating late Saturday afternoon in the heart of Old Town at One Colorado, not to mention the Old Town Haunt in the basement of the Union Savings Bank building at 20 N. Raymond Ave.

Grownups craving some rock with their graveyard ghouls may want to party in Sierra Madre. The Buccaneer Lounge will be jumping with indie-rock bands the Neurotics, the Choke and the Gears, while Café 322 will take on an after-hours vibe when it cranks the amps with White Flag, punk veterans F, Fatso Jetson and Dead White Underbelly. Dress to sweat, as the joint is bound to be packed knee-to-backbone with local revelers, costumed and otherwise, wandering in from Halloween Street up on Alegria.
