Rulers of the roots
Cliff Wagner & The Old #7 stomp into Coffee Gallery
By John Sollenberger 04/30/2012
American roots music rules at Coffee Gallery Backstage Friday night as Cliff Wagner and The Old #7 amble in for a set.
The band’s unique approach has earned it widespread critical buzz. Wagner (banjo, fiddle and lead vocals) and the other members mix bluegrass, blues and honky-tonk in a toe-tapping blend that has put audiences on their feet at gigs all around Southern California.
The group achieved nationwide exposure a few years back on FOX TV’s “The Next Great American Band” competition, finishing seventh out of some 8,000 bands who auditioned. They really took off following the release of the 2008 disc “Hobo’s Lullaby,” which laid out hard-driving blues and bluegrass-influenced sounds with country pop and ballads blended in the mix. This is a group that offers something for everyone. Their latest release is “Country Funk.” Visit them at oldnumber7.net for the full story.
Music starts at 8 p.m. Friday at Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake Ave., Altadena. Tickets are $15. Call (626) 798-6236 or visit coffeegallery.com.
