By John Sollenberger 05/07/2008
Fans of Indian classical sounds and those who like their music early are in luck Sunday morning when the Music Circle comes to Occidental College’s Herrick Chapel in Eagle Rock, where Sarode master Aashish Khan will be performing, accompanied by Swapan Chaudhuri on tabla.
Khan is one of the world’s top performers on the Asain lute. He began studying at age 5 with his grandfather, Baba Allauddin Khan, a legend himself. He is the first Indian musician to become a Royal Asiatic Society fellow, a high honor from Britain’s highest body relating to Asian studies.
Besides performing, he teaches Indian classical music at leading universities, including Cal Arts. He was nominated for a Grammy last year and has worked with Ravi Shankar on film and stage projects.
Chaudhuri is a legend in his own right, inventor of a new style of tabla playing and one of the most sought-after players in the world.
Music starts at 11 a.m. Sunday at Occidental College’s Herrick Chapel, corner of Campus Road and Alumni Avenue in Eagle Rock. Call (626) 449-6987.
