Sherlock Holmes
By Lisa Miller 12/24/2009
ROBERT DOWNEY JR. APPEARS AS HOLMES, CHANNELING JEREMY BRETT’S exquisite line delivery whenever possible. With Guy Ritchie at the helm, the cerebral detective is reinvented as a disheveled bare-knuckle brawler with a fondness for gambling.
Sharing these penchants, Dr. Watson (Law) serves as Holmes’ backup, despite the detective’s experiments on Watson’s bulldog. The crime-fighting duo load their pistols to hunt down Lord Blackwood (Strong), a serial killer seemingly returned from the grave. The film’s largely incomprehensible plot allows for much sarcastic repartee, while showcasing late-19th- century machines.
Directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong and Kelly Reilly
