Amy Goodman has been speaking truth to power from a left-wing perspective for the past 13 years as the co-founder and co-host with Juan Gonzalez of the independent daily radio news program, “Democracy Now!”

Broadcast on more than 750 Pacifica, National Public Radio, community and college stations in addition to PBS, satellite and public access television, the show has become the largest community media collaboration in the US, offering the perspectives of people who often find themselves shut out of exposure or corporate-sponsored media.

The show also features unique debates between leaders from such fields as politics and the Pentagon, and grassroots activists from a wide variety of causes. Now Goodman has come out with a new book titled “Breaking the Sound Barrier,” and her book tour brings her to Pasadena’s bastion of progressivism, All Saints Church, for a 7:30 p.m. event next Thursday.

The event will feature an introduction by the book’s editor, Denis Moynihan, and a reading and talk by Goodman about the book, which collects many of her new articles, including the stories of community organizers in New Orleans, of American soldiers who refuse to fight the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and victims of torture and police violence. Such tales, rarely heard in mainstream media, led to Goodman being chosen as the first journalist to receive the Right Livelihood Award — often described as an “Alternative Nobel Prize” — for her innovative model of independent grassroots journalism.

The evening is hosted by KPFK journalists Ian Masters and Margaret Prescod, which is appropriate considering that the night will be a fundraiser for the Pacifica radio station. Admission is a suggested $10 donation, though anyone needing to pay less will not be turned away.

Goodman’s book will also be available for sale for $16.

Amy Goodman will appear at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at All Saints Church, 132 N. Euclid Ave., Pasadena. Call  (818) 985-2711 or visit kpfk.org.
